About Juan

I am a traveler, software engineer, gamer, photographer, and student.

Other than in this blog you can also find me on Twitter and Flickr. Or you can write me an email.

I’m originally from Spain but in 2007 I spent a year studying in Japan that opened my eyes about the world. Since then I have been lucky enough to live in the US, Ireland and Switzerland. You can read about my experiences on my blog.

Software engineer

I love solving problems with software and that’s what Google currently pays me to do. From 2010 to 2015 I worked designing systems to defend Google users against fraud and abuse. From 2015 onwards I have been leading an effort related to anomaly detection.

When I was younger I spent a lot of time playing online games. As part of that I formed a community initially named 4unrealers that later became Gamersmafia. The initiative lasted 10 years and we formed subcommunities for tens of games with thoustands of members.

Apart from videogames I have great memories of the 4 different Dungeons & Dragons groups that I have DM'ed for over the years. You can read about our adventures here.

Amateur photographer

Before I went to Japan in 2007, years of forced museum visits and school trips had dulled my attention. So the first thing I did when I landed in Osaka was buy a camera to force myself to pay attention to my surroundings. Since then I have been taking pictures and posting them on my blog and to Flickr. Here are some of my favorites:

Abandoned house

If you want to get me talking any of the following topics will do: stoicism, understanding the world & mental models, deliberate practice & the science of expertise and effectiveness.
